Useful addresses
Tourist police Just off the Plaza de Armas, in Pasaje Tiburios. Open 08.00-13.00 and 16.00-19.00 daily. Friendly and helpful. Some English spoken. Contact them if you are robbed or in the event of an accident in the mountains. When closed go to PNP Police on Calle Sucre, block 5 (off Luzuriaga, opposite Plaza de Armas).
Museo Archaeologico Just off the Plaza de Armas, is also the Oficina de Turismo Cultural. Open Mon to Fri until 18.00, and Sat morning. Friendly and helpful information on conventional tours, and Huaraz. Some books and maps available here and the museum is worth a visit. They have a collection of videos including a harrowing one of the 70's earthquake.

There is a profusion of Internet Offices, try in Parque Ginebra near Casa de Guias, or along Av. Luzuriaga.
Casa de Guías
Parque Ginebra 28-G. Tel/fax: 721811. Open 09.00-13.00, 16.00-20.00. Home to the Peruvian Mountain Guide Association. This is the best place in Huaraz for information on trekking and climbing, local or private transportation, prices, guides, cooks, porters, arrieros and mules. They can also advise you on organised trips, weather conditions, and a place to meet up with other hikers. They have a hostel, a rescue team and their qualified mountain and trekking guides are registered members of the association. They have a small library of hiking books for reference, and some books and maps for sale. Don't head for the mountains without visiting them.
